Boy Scouts of America may lift ban on gay members/leaders

A spokesman for the Boy Scouts of America confirms that the organization is in the “final stages” of reversing its ban on gay members.

According to NBC News’ Pete Williams,”The new policy, now under discussion, would eliminate the ban from the national organization’s rules, leaving local sponsoring organizations free to decide for themselves whether to admit gay scouts.”

Deron Smith, a spokesman for the Boy Scouts of America tells Williams,”“The chartered organizations that oversee and deliver scouting would accept membership and select leaders consistent with their organization’s mission, principles or religious beliefs,”

Individual sponsors and parents “would be able to choose a local unit which best meets the needs of their families,” Williams reports.

“The decision follows a nearly yearlong campaign by GLAAD and Scouts for Equality, as well as petitions signed by more than 1.2 million people calling for an end to the BSA’s ban on gay Scouts and Scout leaders,“GLAAD reports.

Zach Wahls, Eagle Scout and founder of Scouts for Equality said in a statement to GLAAD, “We look forward to working with BSA Councils and chartering organizations across the country to end the exclusion of our gay brothers in Scouting, as well as the gay and lesbian leaders who serve the organizations so well.”

NBC News reports that “the change could be announced as early as next week.

The news comes as the same day Think Progress reported that,”A small, Maryland-based chapter of the Boy Scouts of America was forced to take down a statement from their website promising inclusivity and welcoming LGBT scouts and their families after their regional superiors threatened to pull the group’s formal affiliation with the national organization.”
