Survey: 22% of Idaho High School Students Bullied at School

According to this year’s Idaho Youth Risk Behavior Survey released this week by the Idaho Department of Education, out of 1,702  students in 48 public high schools in Idaho,  22.8 percent report being bullied or harassed on school property within the last year.

That’s an increase from last year’s 19.9 percent.

The yearly report surveys students in the 9th-12th grades.

17 percent of those surveyed report that they have been the victim of some sort of online or electronic bullying, while 8.9 percent of the students say they were teased or picked on because someone thought they were gay, lesbian, or bisexual.

Idaho’s bullying law does not  instruct schools how to specifically handle the issue, though a bill that would require school officials to intervene has been introduced to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

More than 15 percent of students said they had seriously considered attempting suicide, which is up from 14.2 percent in 2009. 6.5 percent say they have attempted suicide over the same time period.

According to national bullying statistics, gay and lesbian teens are two to three times as more likely to commit teen suicide than other youths. About 30 percent of all completed suicides have been related to sexual identity crisis.

The bullying factor might be directly tied to Idaho’s high drop out rate as well. Studies show that one out of every 10 students who drops out of school does so because of repeated bullying.

A report released last fall by The Center for Preventing Hate showed that 73 percent of students surveyed at Pocatello’s three high schools said that they would advise closeted gay students not to come out openly about sexual orientation.

Over 40 percent of the students who participated in this year’s Idaho Youth Risk Behavior Survey say they have had sexual intercourse at least once, with 14% reporting they or their partner did not use a condom the last time they had  intercourse.

According to the report, “Hispanic students (6%) were twice as likely as White students (3%) to have had sex for the first time before age 13.”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I am currently doing a research project regarding Idaho’s bullying policy which does exist under section 18-917a of the Idaho code.
