Idaho Agenda Joins In SOPA Protest

In an act of solidarity with thousands of other websites and blogs around the country, the Idaho Agenda is going dark on Wednesday, 1/18/11, from 6AM and 6PM  to protest two pieces of legislation that will encourage censorship of Web content and harm technological innovation.

According to Google, the “two bills before Congress, known as the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House, would censor the Web and impose harmful regulations on American business. Millions of Internet users and entrepreneurs already oppose SOPA and PIPA.”

Should the bills become law, “the U.S. government could order the blocking of sites using methods similar to those employed by China. Law-abiding U.S. internet companies would have to monitor everything users link to or upload or face the risk of time-consuming litigation.”

Chris Heald over at Mashable points out that,”If the AG chooses to take action against a site:

Internet service providers will be required to block your access to the site (section 102(c)(2)(A)(i)) within five days.

Search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.) will be forced to remove all references to the offending sites from their indexes (section 102(c)(2)(B)).

Ad providers (Google AdSense, Federated Media, etc.) will be required to stop providing ad service to the site.

Payment providers (PayPal, Visa, etc.) will be required to terminate service to the site.

Heald also points out that the bills also would mean that,”any site that allows users to post content is “primarily designed for the purpose of offering services in a manner that enables copyright violation.” The site doesn’t have to be clearly designed for the purpose of copyright violation; it only has to provide functionality that can be used to enable copyright violation.”

We at the Idaho Agenda ask you to join with millions of other citizens and contact your lawmakers to share your opposition to these laws.
