Washington Governor to Personally Introduce Marriage Equality Legislation This Year

Oh what a difference a border makes. While we here in Idaho struggle to get our lawmakers to even acknowledge our existence, the state of Washington’s top official has announced she not only supports marriage equality, but she plans to fight for it as well!

KUOW.org reports that,”an emotional Governor Chris Gregoire announced her support for same-sex marriage” on Tuesday.

“Now it’s our time, it’s this generation’s call to end discrimination -– discrimination against our gay and lesbian citizens,” Gregoire told the crowd. “It is time in Washington state for marriage equality.”

Of course not every one agrees with Governor Gregoire. According to KUOW, “State Senator Dan Swecker, a often vocal opponent of gay marriage, did say it’s a divisive issue that will make it harder to resolve the state’s budget shortfall.

Nothing like playing politics with people’s civil rights, hey Swecker?

“It’s time, it’s the right thing to do, and I will introduce a bill to do it,” Gregoire said in a press release. “I say that as a wife, a mother, a student of the law, and above all as a Washingtonian with a lifelong commitment to equality and freedom. Some say domestic partnerships are the same as marriage. That’s a version of the discriminatory ‘separate but equal’ argument.”

If legislation is approved, Washington would be the seventh state in the nation to legalize gay marriage, after Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York plus the District of Columbia.
