The Facists: The Hijacking of Christianity and Politics and Why You Should Give A Damn

It’s easy to consider people like Rick Santorum, Rick Perry and Michelle Bachmann as just another part of the American religious or political landscape, but to do so would be to underestimate one of the largest influential political machines of our time.

Sinclair Lewis warned about such a movement in the 1930’s as did Huey Long and others. Though there is some debate over who actually said,”When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross,” the quote is as applicable today as it was then.

For sometime know I have referred to the so-called religious right as, “fascists” It’s not a term I use lightly nor is it one I simply picked out of this air. It’s actually a term I adopted for the movement after reading Chris Hedges’s excellent book, “American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War On America.”

Let me be clear, I do not consider Christianity as a whole fascist nor do I consider the average “born again” American fascist. I do, however, believe the facts show that there is a consecrated effort in this country that seeks to, “rejuvenate their nation based on commitment to the national community as an organic entity, in which individuals are bound together in national identity by suprapersonal connections of ancestry, culture, and blood.” In that case, and under that definition, I can think of no better label for the movement.

Yesterday GOP Presidential candidate Rick Perry released a campaign commercial typical of the mindset of this religious political movement. Perry is well-connected with a group that calls itself the,”New Apostolic Reformation.” According to researcher/writer/speaker Rachel Tabachnick, “The New Apostolic Reformation is where the anti-gay, anti-abortion, and Christian Zionist networks converge with an aggressive form of Christian “dominionism,” or the belief that Christians must take control over society and government.”:

One only have to look at statements from Perry, Michelle Bachmann, and other political leaders to realize that there is a unified movement happening across the country to form a “more prefect Judeo-Christian union.”

Make no mistake it is a coordinated movement like no other. The Daily Beast’s Michelle Goldberg traces both Perry and Bachmann’s beliefs and political aspirations to the Dominionism movement. She writes,”Put simply, Dominionism means that Christians have a God-given right to rule all earthly institutions. Originating among some of America’s most radical theocrats, it’s long had an influence on religious-right education and political organizing.”

Click HERE to read about the connections between Perry and Bachmann. It will, or should at least, literally scare the hell out of you.

In his book, Republican Gomorrah: Inside The Movement That Shattered The Party, award-winning journalist and bestselling author Max Blumenthal traces the history of the modern religious right movement to its present state. In 2009 Blumenthal explained his findings during a talk given at Town Hall Seattle…

This is isn’t just limited to the public realm either. In the book, “The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power,” author Jeff Sharlet tells the tale of the most powerful group you’ve never heard of…

These groups are spreading their hate beyond America’s borders as well.

Journalist Jody-May Chang explored the connection between the American religious extreme and Uganda’s “kill the gays” bill in an excellent piece titled,Exporting Homophobia: American far-right conservative churches establish influence on anti-gay policy in America”.

As you can see these groups go far beyond your grandmother’s Sunday church services or prayer groups. These people are out for one thing and one thing alone, to usher in a new theocracy wrapped in a flag and carrying the cross.

Please don’t underestimate them as kooks or crazies. If we are going to stop their hate and homophobia, we need to be just as calculated, just as networked, and just as vocal as they are, perhaps even more so.

  3. I got hooked on the Max Blumenthal video, and watched the whole thing. Frightening, for sure. Thank goodness I have read The Family, so I don’t have to spend the rest of my morning on this site! Again, thanks, James. You are doing a great service by highlighting the things we need to know.
