Homophobia From An Osmond: Gays Can Change

Alan Osmond, brother of Donnie and Marie and member of the high council of the LDS Orem Suncrest Stake, writes that he not only believes in the extremely dangerous practice of ex-gay therapy..he supports it.

Osmond’s anti-gay ramblings, posted on a Osmond Family owned website,  were discovered by Back2Stonewall blogger Will Kohler who writes,”In his article, which is so misinformed, ill written and LDS cultlike you expect kool-aid to be served alongside of it, Osmond states that being gay is not genetic and that reparative therapy does work.  He also goes on to quote LDS President Gordon B. Hinckley who has said in the past “Prophets of God have repeatedly taught through the ages that practices of homosexual relations, fornication, and adultery are grievous sins. Sexual relations outside the bonds of marriage are forbidden by the Lord. We affirm those teachings.”

Osmond of course is not only wrong but he’s touting  the kind of  misinformation that leads to shame, self-destruction and in some cases even suicide.

Truth Wins Out explains:

The American Psychiatric Association in its position statement on Psychiatric Treatment and Sexual Orientation states: The potential risks of “reparative therapy” are great, including depression, anxiety and self destructive behavior, since therapist alignment with societal prejudices against homosexuality may reinforce self hatred already experienced by the patient. Many patients who have undergone “reparative therapy” relate that they were inaccurately told that homosexuals are lonely, unhappy individuals who never achieve acceptance or satisfaction. The possibility that the person might achieve happiness and satisfying interpersonal relationships as a gay man or lesbian is not presented, nor are alternative approaches to dealing with the effects of societal stigmatization discussed.

The American Psychological Association in its Resolution on Appropriate Therapeutic Responses to Sexual Orientation, which is also endorsed by the National Association of School Psychologists, states: That the American Psychological Association opposes portrayals of lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth and adults as mentally ill due to their sexual orientation and supports the dissemination of accurate information about sexual orientation, and mental health, and appropriate interventions in order to counteract bias that is based in ignorance or unfounded beliefs about sexual orientation.

One has to wonder what kind of monster could endorse such harmful practices when Osmond’s very own niece, Marie’s daughter, is a lesbian…

While there have been strides made within the LDS church regarding its LGBTQIA members, it’s clear that until its leaders start  publicly condemning such views as Alan Osmond’s it remains a danger to the lives, liberty and pursuits of happiness for many of its members.

  1. He should read this:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/8878301/Rugby-player-who-had-stroke-woke-up-gay-and-became-hairdresser.html

For me, this nails the lid shut on the Nature/Nurture debate. Homosexuality is wired into people. This guy had an accident that rewired him, so now is he is a homosexual. It could work the other way, if for example I had a stroke or an accident – I might end up heterosexual. The sheer vastness of the numbers of homosexuals on the planet, and the irreversibility of their orientation despite all they’re put through is gradually dawning on people as our confidence grows with the floodgates of empancipation now inching open.

This is so sad. I find it interesting that Marie herself has had 2 LGBT children. You would think after the first one took his own life they would pull their heads out of their Holier than thou asses.

  3. @Jani..To be fair she has publicly denied that her son was gay. http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/marie-osmond-opens-michael-blosil-oprah/story?id=12120777. But yeah, you would think 🙂

  4. James, I saw that, and posted this comment:

“Most gay people, including me, love and respect women, it doesn’t mean we want to have sex with them.

The Mormon Osmonds are on the record as believing LGBT orientation can be changed, despite *every* reputable psychological/psychiatric body including APA repeatedly stating the opposite, and ex-inmates of Exodus Foundation apologising for it and repudiating its arcane quackery.

With parents like that, of course their LGBT children will feel suicidally depressed being repeatedly told their inwired and immutable, yet harmless orientation is “evil”.

Under these conditions, Marie’s self-pitying, publicity stunt crocodile tears don’t wash with me.”
