Change of Heart in Denver: Transgender Girl Allowed To Join Girl Scouts

A Denver Girl Scout troop says it made a mistake when it told a transgender  7-year old-girl she couldn’t join because she still had “boy parts.”  When Felisha Archuleta, who refers to the child as a he,  went to register Bobby Montoya a troop leader told her Bobby couldn’t join. “I said, ‘Well, what’s the big deal?’ She said ‘It doesn’t matter how he looks, he has boy parts, he can’t be in Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts don’t allow that [and] I don’t want to be in trouble by parents or my supervisor,'” Archuleta told 9NEWS in Denver.

Huff Post reports that, “The Girl Scouts Of Colorado have since admitted a mistake was made. Apparently the worker who turned Montoya away was unfamiliar with the group’s policies, and Bobby is now welcome to join the group. It’s unclear as to whether or not she has decided to join in light of the reversal.”

A statement from the Girl  Scouts of Colorado says they are working as an organization to be more inclusive to all females,” If a child identifies as a girl and the child’s family presents her as a girl, Girl Scouts of Colorado welcomes her as a Girl Scout. Our requests for support of transgender kids have grown, and Girl Scouts of Colorado is working to best support these children, their families and the volunteers who serve them.”

Corey Barrett with the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center of Colorado tells WSTP-TV, “the Center is seeing young people exploring their gender identity at an earlier age.

“There has definitely been this increase of questioning at an early age,” Barrett said, “I think it’s all about providing a healthy environment for them for that to happen. Everyone needs to be prepared or at least have an idea from a policy and procedure stand point how they’re going to address that. And make sure that the public is aware of that.”

Unlike the Boy Scouts which has long fought inclusive efforts, the Girl Scouts Of America has maintained that the organization does not discriminate, and does not endorse any particular lifestyle.

Archuleta tells the Denver television station that Montoya  has been the subject of bulling and harassment at school and that it hurts to watch her child have to go through it.
