Magic Valley Unitarian Fellowship Board Votes To Support Local National Coming Out Day Event

On Sunday  October 9th, history was made in the Twin Falls area when the Board of Directors of the Magic Valley Unitarian Universalitst Fellowship unanimously voted to join with the CSI Gay Straight Alliance club to support National Coming out Day.

The move marks the the first time a religious body located in the Magic Valley has officially endorsed a LGBTQIA community function.

In a release to church members, MVUUF president Ken Whiting wrote, “MVUUF members and friends wishing to join us in supporting the College of Southern Idaho’s Gay Straight Alliance are invited to meet at the steps of the Twin Falls County Courthouse Tuesday evening (October 11th) beginning at 7:30 PM. (Please arrive a little earlier – perhaps 7:00 PM).”

The candlelight vigil, sponsored by the the College of Southern Idaho’s Gay Straight Alliance Club, will mark not only National Coming Out Day but also the 13th anniversary of the death of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard and the kick off to Idaho’s “Add the words” campaign in the Magic Valley as well.

Those helping to organize the event say it’s not only important in rural areas like the Magic Valley for other LGBTQIA individuals to know they aren’t alone, but to also draw attention to the fact that many individuals throughout Idaho could lose their employment and housing for publicly acknowledging their sexual preference.

Known around the world for it’s support for equality of all peoples, according to the UUA’s International website, “Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religion that embraces theological diversity; we welcome different beliefs and affirm the inherent worth and dignity of every person.”

The Magic Valley Fellowship meets at 10:00 AM on Sunday mornings at the Senior Citizens Center, located at 530 Shoshone Street West Twin Falls. Visit their website for more information.

(Editor’s Note: Words can not express how proud I am of the board’s support for this event. I am truly proud to call the MVUUF my spiritual home. If you do not have a current church home, please consider visiting a UUF located near you.-JT)

  1. Nothing short of brilliant. Props to all with the courage to make this happen.

  2. I just posted this on the MVUUF website: I was so pleased to read on James Tidmarsh’s blog The Idaho Agenda, that you are participating in National Coming Out Day. Way to go! If you can come to Pocatello, PUUF is having a Coming Out Day service and celebration of our becoming a UUA Welcoming Congregation on October 16. We meet at 4:00 pm at the UCC Church, 309 North Garfield. We need to get to know you better, since we share Suzanne.
